ASBESTOS ABATEMENT (ASBESTOS REMOVAL)

From the 1950s until the 1980s, asbestos was the material of choice during that time because of its rot-resistant and fire-resistant properties, durability, affordability and ease of use. It was highly flexible and used on everything from roofs, sidings, shingles and floor tiles to piping and ceilings of houses. It wasn’t until the early ‘70s that the federal government placed a moratorium on asbestos. Undisturbed, asbestos does not pose a threat. It is when the fibers become airborne, be it from a remodel, fire, natural disaster or some other event, that the fibers can be inhaled into the lungs.

We Meet or Exceed New York's Asbestos Removal Requirements

The following steps ensure that asbestos-containing material is removed safely, that the asbestos removal process provides a clean environment, and that asbestos removal jobs in Levittown meet or exceed New York State's Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) requirements for asbestos removal. Each step ensures the health and safety of our workers and others who will enter the asbestos removal area in Levittown after abatement.

Begin by Setting Up an Asbestos Containment

Safe Asbestos Removal begins by containing the area where we will remove asbestos-containing material. We seal off uncontaminated surfaces with 6 mil plastic sheets. The plastic sheets keep asbestos dust and fibers from getting into other areas or rooms in the structure.

The containment area must be setup to meet the specific requirements for the material being removed. We give special attention to windows, doors, counters, cupboards, sinks, showers, and tubs to ensure that no asbestos dust can get on any fixtures.

After setting up the containment area, we check the taped seals to ensure that no asbestos fibers can escape the containment area.

Next, we position a three-stage HEPA negative air machine in the work area and install clean air exhaust ducts to the outside. The HEPA negative air machine filters the inside air and exhausts clean air to the outside while trapping air-borne asbestos particles in the vacuum filters.

Finally, we ensure that all asbestos removal equipment and small work tools are in place ready to use in the containment area.

We Contained This Storage Area to Provide Safe Future Use and Comply with State and Federal Regulations.

Put on Respirator and a Protective Suit

Next, we put on a protective suit made of a material called tyvek, and put on a respirator rated for asbestos removal before starting to remove any asbestos-containing material.

Because the health and safety of the workers is crucial, we ensure that each worker is dressed in conformance with New York State's Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) code for hazardous waste removal before we begin working.

Secure Entry to Work Area and Start Negative Air Machine

Close and secure the entry to the work area prior to starting to remove asbestos-containing material. After the asbestos removal process begins, no unauthorized person shall be allowed enter the work area.

Before removing any asbestos-containing material, turn on the three-stage HEPA negative air machine. Make sure the air ducts installed on the machine are running to the outside.

Bag Asbestos Material As Asbestos Removal Proceeds

Depending on the type of material being removed, place the removed material in containers specified by New York State code.

As we remove asbestos containing material, we spray the material with water amended with an approved surfactant. When the material is wet on all sides, we put the material in double bags 6 mil thick. Then we seal each bag assembly conforming with New York State's Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) requirements before we start filling another bag.

Perform In-Progress Inspections

While we remove the asbestos we check to ensure that no asbestos-containing material remains in the area we are evacuating. We also check to ensure that bagged material is placed where the bags cannot be damaged. These in-progress inspections ensure that the asbestos removal procedure continually remains in compliance with the New York State NYSDEC requirements.

Clean Area where Asbestos-Containing Material was Removed

After removing the asbestos-containing material, we clean the abated area with HEPA vacuum cleaners and clean wet rags. We dispose of the cleaning rags in double 6-mill bags in the same manner that we disposed of the asbestos-containing material.

Remove and Dispose of Protective Clothing

At end of the work day or at the end of the job, we remove the protective tyvek suit and dispose of the tyvek suit in a double plastic bag and seal the bag.

Clean Up the Job Site and Dispose of All Asbestos-Containing Material

After removing asbestos-containing material from a job site, we place all the bagged material and the containment plastic from the contained area into a sealable dumpster for transporting to an approved asbestos disposal site. Proper NYSDEC transporting certificates must accompany the hazardous asbestos waste to the disposal site.
